FOSS is the Future

Few days back Shubendhu laughed when I said Foss is the future. But dude you have laughed previously and have being proved wrong before. Remember I said if there could be a different roads for the buses and cars. And you said that is weired. But today something like that is known as BRT. Then I said that if drivers could see the roads and traffics even before they hit the roads. You said that this is more of a Science fiction than a reality. But today we use it as GPS. But thank you dude cos if this string continues then surely Foss is the future.
Today when the latest version of Ubuntu comes out of the shelfs it promises to take this journey one step further. LTS 10.04 promises be not just to give windows a run for its money but I hope that it further makes the Linux computing easier. Once which was known be to only for the computer geeks is now used even by guys like me who hardly know the “C” of computer. I still remember days when my cousin who was a software engineer student at that time. Used to type codes after codes and get fantastic stuffs from that. Today I don't have to type boring codes to get the same results. Ubuntu and Linux's other versions like Suse or Mandriva have evolved and went on to be user friendly. When I bought my PC way back in 2007, it came with Suse Linux 9.2. It was really good to use but I could not play song and movies. But as the price of Internet fall in India and also in other developing countries Linux which overwhelmingly depends on the Internet of plug-ins and updates will catch on with the youth and old alike. Unlike windows the best thing in Linux is that it does not suffers from the problem of viruses. So in does needs any anti-virus software and system does not slows down. Being an environmentalist I have always faced a challenge when I used to go somewhere for few minutes while computer was running. To shut it down. But as usual windows took ages to start up. But Linux take 10 to 20 seconds only to startup. And I used to hate computing with windows as it was slow with Linux I enjoy working on computer. Today I want to buy Laptop free of any kind of stuff related to Microsoft. It is because Microsoft is full of viruses and it slows the system tremendously. On the other hand Linux does not knows what is virus and runs smoothly all time. Most of the net-books are also coming with Linux. So that it reduces price and increases performance. Even in smart phone market Android is second only to Apple's I-phone Aps store.
Even the Indian Government have started to go from Windows to Linux. Even this is the second big consumer of our country's foreign reserve after oil. Even the big three political which are always at loggerheads with each other are united here. Therefore I totally believe the future of computing is FOSS. Because it is free(dom) and open.

Climate Criminals

There was a seminar on Climate Change and Global Warming in the women' college. And most of the speakers lambasted repeatedly the United States of America for all the climate crises which the world is facing today. Thought there is not an iota of doubt in this fact USA is the biggest polluter on the planet today. But the exaggeration by them is simply the by product of the left (mis)rule which have created anti America but they them selves have done nothing less than what the Americans have done. Cos if they were so responsible to the environment then they could not have created a ministry of environment for sleep only purpose. If it were not the hard efforts and iron will of environmentalists under Subhas Dutta. The smoke spewing 2 stokes could still have been there on the roads of Kolkata to pollute. And we have seen that how reluctant the government was in this case. And the most recent one was the exclusion of Environmental Education marks from the class 12th score when going ...

Destination Moon - Pallava Bagla, Subhadra Menon

In 2008 Indian Flag was planted on lunar soil. But how did Indian reached their? What started with sending sounding rockets for the benefit of the newly formed developing country ended up being the leading space programme in the world? It gives all the details on how the Indian Space Programme evolved. Starting literally from scratch, and fight foreign embargoes and technology denial regimes it evolved in to country’s if not world finest institution. It shows how it started under the visionaries like Vikram Sarbai, Homi Bhaba, and the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and was subsequently supported by different governments. The space programme it self shows that if given in the right hands and in down in the best way possible it can not only be India’s best but also world’s best. It is surely inspiration for all the crumbling government institutions. In the later chapters it also gives us an insight into the future of ISRO. It also have the interview Dr G.Madhavan Nairof ISRO, Dr....

Blink: Malcolm Gladwell

The author describes the main subject of his book as "thin-slicing": our ability to gauge what is really important from a very narrow period of experience. In other words, spontaneous decisions are often as good as—or even better than—carefully planned and considered ones. Gladwell draws on examples from science, advertising, sales, medicine, and popular music to reinforce his ideas. Gladwell also uses many examples of regular people's experiences with "thin-slicing." Gladwell explains how an expert's ability to "thin slice" can be corrupted by their likes and dislikes, prejudices and stereotypes (even unconscious ones), and how they can be overloaded by too much information. Gladwell also tells us about our instinctive ability to mind read, which is how we can get to know what emotions a person is feeling just by looking at his or her face. We do that by "thin-slicing," using limited information to come to our conclusion. In what Gladwel...
