A Special Request

When I was selected and after I came to know that Sandeep da is in 4th year of his B.E then I thought I am the youngest climate champ form east zone. But on 6th of July when we all met I was proved wrong. There was someone who was even younger than me. What’s better he had academic background just like. Had science till class 12th and now doing political science. I missed him throughout Delhi cos I thought he will share those leg pulling sessions I had with the seniors and those big questions about how I being a history student come into environmental field. And after coming back to Kolkata I helped as much by giving those manuals we got in Delhi. He helped with the Political Science stuff. And in no time we were good friends and we found so much common stuff between us. Without him most of my formal dresses could still be not be used. I thought them to be worn only during the meetings with GB. But after meeting him I felt they are also stylish. I never used wallet thought it to be ver

Our PM(s): Part 1

The date was 1st of June 2010. I was very nervous when I called the British Council office and some one picked up the phone and told me I have been short-listed for the interview. That was the start and after that she has not stopped her habit of giving me good news on phone. The next day was 21st of June and she told me I have been selected as International Climate Champion 2010 and she will be our Program Manager. To whom I affectionately refer as our PM. (The reason You all know) Well the first problem I had was calling her ma'am. Finally after going to Delhi I learnt to call her Radhika Di. Well describing her is not a very easy job. Even for someone like who have been Junior Journalist. She is just awesome. From the first day till now never perhaps it has happened that I have asked for any kind of help and she has not given me that. She is sometimes a bit bossy but most of the time just like our friend. What I have found her to be is like one of my elder sisters. On whom I c

My Climate Buddies – Part 1

On 21st of June 2010, 9 young and intelligent students in and around Kolkata were selected by British Council as International Climate Champion 2010 after a hard selection process. They became the part of the Eastern Zone of climate champs. And also a very special zone of my heart. I was also one of them and the only one to be living in the suburbs of Kolkata. In last three years of ICC never before have so many Climate Champs been selected from Kolkata. Though our numbers were large still we all were so close, sorry are close. I still remember how I was counting days for the 6th July when we all were going to meet for the first time. It was such nice time we all had. Even before they knew each other all got to know me. It was such a nice time I had planning the trip to Delhi for every one. Unfortunately Shreenita Di left us for her higher studies but still you were all there. Well lets start the story of the journey from the day one. Well as usual I reached the BC first. But then ca

There he Goes

The date was 30th of June 2010. I when out from a local train at Shayamnagar station. I thought of meeting a big tall old guy. But all my hope were met partly. I was a bit surprised. Talked about my project and other stuff that day and found him quite helpful. I got to know about mychlorophyll.com. I opened it as fsat as my computer could start (I must tell you that My Ubuntu Linux takes only 20 seconds to boot. So that was quite fast). Next meeting with him was in the Bristish Council on 6th of July. Perhaps one of the most memorable one. Because we live very near to each other. We both went Sealdah on Amitava's car. There he boarded a train saturated with people. And I had to jump from the wrong side to get down from the train. From then to till he went he gave me some very nice experiences on the train. Except a few. But I will miss those all now. Just last day I came to home on a empty train missing him a lot. Missing all that arguments he had once with a co-passenger for getti

My Earth My Duty

On 25th August our college organized a small Tree Plantation and inauguration of Prakriti the eco-club of RBC College. On the occasion the Principal of the college could not be present due to some unforeseen reasons. But Vice-Principal Sir planted the first sapling to start the event. Then PB sir, BB sir and other faculty members planted saplings. Ayan da our climate champ and our Special Guest also planted the sapling. Principal Sir planted the sapling on 26th. Then the VP Sir inaugurated Prakriti. BB Sir gave his speech regarding joining and asked me to take the helm of affairs in my hand. Then I gave my speech and politely refused to take charge of the Eco-Club rather I will become the Secretary and my Friend Suraj will be the Vice-President. Then Ayan da gave his speech which was great as usual. Many of my friends were motivated to join eco club after that. Then Suraj gave his speech which was very official like. Then we took the names of the student and staff members. We got arou

Vande Mataram.

This year I heard for the first why should we celebrate 15th August as our Independence Day. Latest such reason came from my very close friend Amitava. Whose reason was very technical one. But I didn't believe him and to counter him I went through technical documents. In short, books on Indian Government and Indian Independence Act 1947. But I the process I have found that our governmental system of which we point so many defects is simply work of the best minds our country have ever produced. And if it has decayed today than it is all because of all of us. I have talked about the same in the last post. We are failing today because except selected few no one thinks of the country. We are all thinking 24X7 about our self. But at the end of the day we have politicians to blame for all the mistakes we have committed throughout the Day. I have seen how our Municipality put waste bins at regular intervals. But public did not bothered to keep their town clean. We live in a small town.

Tryst With Destiny

Guys I thought of writing a post on this occasion but then I read this and I thought that what this genius have written then is valid for today just as it was in 1947. So just read this wonderful speech by our first Prime Minister. But I will surely write something in the evening. Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. At the dawn of history India started on her unending quest, and trackless centuries are filled with her striving and the grandeur of her success and her failures. . The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and achievements th

First Monthly Evaluation Meet at BC.

It was 12th Aug exactly three months from the my 19th birthday and the date when I sent my project plan. And exactly one month from the date we left for Delhi. Delhi I miss you a lot. 12th is really very lucky for me. I got there way before time cos the train schedules are in a way that if I couldn't have gone at that time I would have reached way late. But thanks to Amitava I didn't got bored. Who with his No Independence Day theory kept me busy. And I am busy with that even today. Well all the guys came at time except Biphasyee Di, Tullika Di, and Vineet. There was an Interactive session with R A Lohia from Indian Plastic Association. Thanks to Souran da. Then he gave the presentation about his project. Then Mr. Lohia talked about use of plastics. Rather proper use of it. I think someone from the south zone is doing a project on plastics. I think he could use the help. I am very sorry that I have forgot the name of the champ. But it remember it was I guy. And he talked about

Rome is burning

India for last 63 years has travelled a lot of distance unmatched by any other country and in a way never seen in any other country. But every where we look there is still a lot of work to be done. There are many places where the work has gone terribly wrong. But I want to ask is this all governments responsibility. We take pride in calling our country world’s largest democracy. But we don’t like the burden it brings to us with it. In democracy not one or two people are responsible but we the people are responsible. Today from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Gujarat to Assam we face plethora of problem. In the last few weeks we have seen the state of affairs in Kashmir. In the Delhi meet Puneet told me a lot about their great state. But I want to question why all the rights which we can enjoy in our place is not given to them. Are they not living in a free country? Puneet can’t even send SMS. Why is this partiality? Same is for all those Maoist infected places. Are they not citizens of In

Commonwealth Games 2010

This year is year of celebrations for all of the Indians. The festival coming up in October this year does not belong to any religion or a community. But is festival for all of us who call themselves Indians. Forget about the news created by media and the big price tag which is associated with it. But does national pride have had any price. Is not price less? I will never forget that time when I touched the Baton. It was as if something passed through me. It wasn’t just Goosebumps; something also came out of my eyes after they took the photo. It is way better than Beijing Olympic Torch. It is simply awesome. Thanks to Michel Foley of National Institute of Design. Who say that Indians are less than any country? This feeling of pride is simply priceless. No currency paper can buy that for me. And I think that is same for all of us. This year’s games are going to be the first Green Commonwealth Games. Isn’t that great. Our forefathers who fought for independence would only have thought

Together we can

I liked the idea given by Sulakshana. Why should we all work separately and not together? After all, all of ours projects are related to climate change. We are just tackling it through different fronts. Someone is working for green building, someone in climate finance, someone in awareness etc. But my project has got best of all the worlds. So surely need the help of all you guys out there. But then the one of our Martian Mr. Raghav’s worry is very correct. What I think we should do is we should simply write about what we are doing and let the help flow in. All the things which Raghav says are true and practical. But then we have to make our project impactful. And this work cannot be done alone for sure. So we should focus our energy at not more than ten projects at a time. But surely we can pass suggestions and all to others. For example we in East Zone more precisely ICCs in and around Kolkata have 4 waste management projects so we are doing it together. I also have a waste managemen

We are the Climate Generation

Today our world faces plethora of problems. And I believe that most dangerous are the environmental problems. Unlike others which people think can be solved by guns and cannons. These problems can never be solved in the same way. It needs awakening of the human mind. It needs us to develop the respect which we must have for our only living planet. Lives will be lost, homes will be destroyed our whole is on the edge of annihilation. But there is a silver lining to this dark cloud. From 13th to 17th July one of the brightest minds from this part of the world (India and Sri Lanka) were engaged in a training programme which is one of a kind. The training programme was organised by TERI and British Council. And all those brightest minds are International Climate Champions 2010. Part of British council’s initiative of creating Climate Generation. Those 5 days were one of the best days of my life. Not only did I learn so much from our wonderful trainers Laura and Sarah but also from my Climat

Delhi Chalo

Hi everyone. Climate buddies meet you tomorrow. And all my other buddies I won't be meeting you all before 18th. I will be seen in college from 19th. Don't miss me too much. But I will miss you all and the college very much. Just wish me good luck. All my climate buddies wish you a happy journey. Hope we all succeed in doing what we all want to do. We mean Green

Its been more than one week since I have been selected International Climate Champion 2010. The quantum of my happiness cannot really be measured by the words of mine. But I think that I can express that only through my work for the world. Well I have found that all the things which I have got with the ICC 2010 are not for free. I have a really big challenge in front of me. The same is for all other 51 Climate Champs. I think we all should be friends what I have termed as Climate Buddies. And work together. I would love to help any one in any project if He/she asks for help. I will also love if anyone can contribute to my project. Because this world does not belong to me or you it belongs to next generation. And we as young generation must make sure that those high wall of hate which we better know as International Boundaries are taken down. Even I have already got help from previous years ICC Ayan da (Sengupta). I have already started to make detailed plans for my project, got my Gre

FOSS is the Future

Few days back Shubendhu laughed when I said Foss is the future. But dude you have laughed previously and have being proved wrong before. Remember I said if there could be a different roads for the buses and cars. And you said that is weired. But today something like that is known as BRT. Then I said that if drivers could see the roads and traffics even before they hit the roads. You said that this is more of a Science fiction than a reality. But today we use it as GPS. But thank you dude cos if this string continues then surely Foss is the future. Today when the latest version of Ubuntu comes out of the shelfs it promises to take this journey one step further. LTS 10.04 promises be not just to give windows a run for its money but I hope that it further makes the Linux computing easier. Once which was known be to only for the computer geeks is now used even by guys like me who hardly know the “C” of computer. I still remember days when my cousin who was a software engineer student at t

The Best Earth Day

This year the 40th anniversary of the Earth Day was the best Earth Day I have ever celebrated in my whole life. This time my most of the plans for the day were realised, it reached record largest number of people. The majority of people whom we went to didn't even knew what is Earth Day. I love working for government after this. First as a stubborn child ask you many questions why, why, why, how, how, how, where, where, where. But once you convince them all the resource they have with them is yours. Every kind of help they can offer in your work. But as many knows that government works are not that good. That is because, once the people in-charge of the work gets the money he forgets the responsibility. But as a team leader I have tried my best to get the best out of the volunteers. Yes I have failed at many places. But I have pulled up a really good show. Even princi is thinking about our request for a separate Eco Club. Hope we'll get that coming academic year. So hope you

Climate Criminals

There was a seminar on Climate Change and Global Warming in the women' college. And most of the speakers lambasted repeatedly the United States of America for all the climate crises which the world is facing today. Thought there is not an iota of doubt in this fact USA is the biggest polluter on the planet today. But the exaggeration by them is simply the by product of the left (mis)rule which have created anti America but they them selves have done nothing less than what the Americans have done. Cos if they were so responsible to the environment then they could not have created a ministry of environment for sleep only purpose. If it were not the hard efforts and iron will of environmentalists under Subhas Dutta. The smoke spewing 2 stokes could still have been there on the roads of Kolkata to pollute. And we have seen that how reluctant the government was in this case. And the most recent one was the exclusion of Environmental Education marks from the class 12th score when going

Train To Pakistan

It is summer of 1947. But Partition does not mean much to the Sikhs and Muslims of Mano Majra, a village on the border of India and Pakistan. Then, a local money-lender Lala Ram Lal is murdered, and suspicion falls upon Juggut Singh, the village gangster who is love with a Muslim girl Nooro. But then a train carrying dead bodies from Pakistan arrives. The local magistrate tries his best to hide the reality from the villagers. But they get to know the real truth. The refugees from the Pakistan also want to kill the Muslims in the village but the villagers manage to safely send them to the nearest refugee camp. But then a stranger comes to the villager and incites communal passions. The village is transformed into a battlefield, and neither the magistrate nor the police are able to stem the rising tide of violence. Amidst conflicting loyalties, it is left to Juggut Singh to redeem himself and reclaim peace for his village. First published in 1956, Train to Pakistan is a classic of mode

NSS “Special” Camp

After a long long wait came the special camp of our NSS unit. When we first read all the manuals and heard the briefing at the workshop from MR sir. Everyone was very nervous and thought the this is gonna be very tough job but thanks to our seniors it was lot less painful experience. I was made the team leader of team A and we were the best of all. We did the most number of survey and also gave PO a critical summary of the whole matter which was very helpful to him. We first divided our team into two groups. That is why we covered much more ground than others. In my group I must say that Lipika was the most hard working and most talkative. And Ismial or “E Smile” was our marker. We really did a great job. Guys thanks a lot. Then the last day of our camp Princi came so the journo ma'am too but when Chemistry sir (I don't know his name) came all the girl went mad every one was taking his photo graphs. Now Lipika asked Princi how to become Princi. What a question ain't it? B

College in Colours

Holi is round the corner and the college is already coloured is just about every colour you could possibly imagine. You know the guys against whom we fought election this year are also so good that they have now become our so good friends. And at the end of the day it feels so good to have all of them around you. So much love can be see in those red and black faces whom you can't even recognise. Really holi is a festival to forget all the differences in heart and colour yourself in everyone's colour. Again yesterday I felt that our college is the best perhaps not academically but surely our heart is the biggest of all. I am really gonna cry a lot when I'll leave this second home of mine after 2 years from now.(Oh no already 1 year have passed by) Bye and Happy Holi

We Need Change, We Intend To Have Change.

As in the previous post I told in brief about why SFI should go. In this post I will talk about why we need change. In the time which SFI spent looting us the time 21 years to be precise, the world has changed a lot. But unfortunately our college never saw that change. We don’t have basic amenities we should be the right of every student. We don’t have computers in our departments, neither do we access to internet. On other hand other colleges are encouraging their students to use study materials from the cyber space. Neither do we have clubs for cultural activities. In a college like ours we a wide spectrum of talent which waits only to be tapped. In that way not only we be able develop their talents but also we can make our college’s name. After all this is 21st century. We can’t think like a 20th and work like 19th guys. We got a student union for 21st century. Apart from that we Class Representatives who stay in the class not those who are always out. Which is surely the case with
